Upgrading Your Existing Custom Closet Systems: Practical Tips

As someone who designs and builds custom closet systems, I’ve learned some valuable tips and tricks over the years. After you’ve had your custom closet for a while, you might want to give it a little facelift. There are lots of ways you might consider upgrading and updating your closet to make sure it’s still meeting your needs.

Here are some ways to improve your custom closet system:

  • Add drawers or drawer dividers
  • Invest in pull-out accessories
  • Upgrade your closet lighting
  • Update the color scheme
  • Check for damage and wear and tear

If you’re ready to spruce up your closet, let’s get started!

Add Drawers or Drawer Dividers

You might notice that your drawers are stuffed full. Decluttering will make a big difference, but it’s also possible that you don’t have enough drawer space or that the space you do have just isn’t working for you.

Adding drawers to your custom closet is one idea. This will allow you to better categorize your folded belongings. Another option is to add drawer dividers. These organizers can keep your socks, belts, jewelry, and other small items separated and easier to find. You can customize the layout of your drawers, which will make getting dressed in the morning less of a hassle.

Invest in Pull-Out Accessories

When you first had your custom closet system installed, you might not have added pull-out accessories. These help you make good use of every inch, as they are only out in the open when you’re actively using them. The rest of the time, they’ll fold, latch, or telescope back against the wall or in between the other accessories.

Some examples of pull-out accessories include a mirror that slides out for quick outfit changes, a telescoping valet rod to hold the next day’s outfit, or even a fold-down ironing board for touch-ups.

Upgrade Your Closet Lighting

The right lighting can make a tremendous difference in your closet system. Putting in brighter or better lights will let you see everything more easily and can give the space a whole new feel.

Consider installing LED strip lighting along the shelves or under cabinets to brighten dark corners and to make it easy to find items. Motion sensor lights are another option; these are great not only for convenience but also for energy efficiency. After all, if the lights turn off automatically when you leave the closet, you won’t ever forget to turn them off.

Update the Color Scheme

Another way to give your custom closet system a facelift is to put on a new coat of paint. While most people have neutral colors on their closet walls, bold colors are another option, according to Brush Brothers Painting. Be sure to take your time and tape off all of the closet components before beginning.

Sprucing up the color doesn’t have to be with paint. You can also add fun and decorative accessories, like wall art or small sculptures. If you have a colorful purse or shoe collection, putting these items behind glass doors allows you to display them while also protecting them from dust. You might also try arranging your clothing by color to add to the visual appeal.

Check for Damage and Wear & Tear

Finally, check everything over for damage and wear & tear. The closets I build come with a lifetime warranty on the wooden products. This means that if something breaks during regular use, we’ll replace or repair it free of charge.

Regular wear and tear wouldn’t be included, but you might be able to replace some pieces. For example, shelves and hanging rods are simple to replace; let us know, and we can help you get new ones to match what you have.

Conclusion

As we approach spring, many people are beginning to update their homes, and custom closet systems should be no exception. Follow the tips above to reduce clutter and upgrade your storage spaces.
