Tackling the Linen Closet

Mike Merritt • Apr 03, 2018

Spring is officially here, well ok it’s been here for a couple of weeks now, but it’s now time to do something about it. Spring to many means organizing and cleaning and at Life Uncluttered, we feel wouldn’t be doing our part if we didn’t give you a few pointers on organization.

The next couple of weeks we are going to highlight a new part of your house to get “Spring Ready”. Let’s start with something a little easy, the Linen Closet. It should take a couple of hours so make sure you have the proper amount of time allotted, you don’t want to start something you can’t finish.

Are you ready to begin?

The first step is always to empty the entire closet. You should take the time now to separate the items into categories: towels, sheets, blankets, pillows, table linens, toiletries, etc. Make sure during this time you make a separate pile of items you’d like to donate. Once you got your piles, wipe the shelves with a damp cloth or sponge, wait until they are dry and line the shelves, preferably with acid-free paper. I love these liners from Crabtree and Evelyn and William Sonoma.

Now you should have a clean slate to work with. Make sure you keep the items that you use the most up front. The beach towels can probably be more towards the back of the closet. Bulky items like comforters and quilts can be vacuum sealed and stored higher up in the closet. If you are going to have toiletries in your linen closet you should use a basket for storage. For those of you with small children, make sure you place these items on a higher shelf away from small hands.

Label and place items seasonally for easy use. To keep everything smelling fresh you can place a box of baking soda or sachet in the closet. Another tip is to buy a couple of cedar blocks to keep moths away.

No more procrastinating, time to clean out those closets!!
