Make Home Organizing a Family Affair

It’s no secret that household chores often fall on the shoulders of a single person. As we told you earlier this week, January is Get Organized Month. It’s time to get everyone in your household involved with tidying up. After all, they helped to make the mess! Here are three ways to get the entire family in the cleaning mood.

1. Make it a family affair – Living rooms, where families spend the bulk of their time, have a tendency to get out of order quite quickly. But a family of four can make the mess disappear in no time. Get everyone involved – just for 15 or 20 minutes – picking up and organizing around the house a few nights each week. To make it fun, play some energetic music to keep the mood positive. Young children will enjoy this, and it’ll be a plus for you since they probably love to do everything you do.

2. Clutter baskets – Place extra boxes or laundry baskets in rooms that seem to get the most disorganized. Anything that’s in the wrong spot or doesn’t belong in the room at all should be placed in the basket. But in order for the concept of clutter baskets to work, they must be emptied often. A clean, tidy room with a random basket of junk in the corner will defeat the purpose.

3. Create zones – Whether each room is a zone or each room has multiple zones, decide what sections each of your children will be responsible for. You can even let them choose their own zone(s). This is a great way to create some friendly competition and encourage kids to keep things neat and tidy.
