Get Your Master Bedroom Closet Organized for the New Year

Mike Merritt • Dec 26, 2019
If getting organized is your new year’s resolution, you’re in good company. This is one of the most common promises we make ourselves at the start of a new year. In fact, Dave Kushner from Closet Decor & More has written an article about it. Check out How to Get Organized in 2020 for some tips that you can apply to every area of your home.

One area that many people struggle with is the master bedroom. If you decide that’s where you’d like to start, we have some good tips for moving out the clutter, finding room for all of your belongings, and learning to love this storage space.

Clean Out the Clutter

Before you can organize your walk-in closet, you need to clear out the clutter. What counts as clutter in the closet? If a particular item isn’t something that you use and love, then it’s probably clutter. Exceptions can be made for sentimental items (such as a sweater that your aunt knitted for you years ago or the outfit that your child wore home from the hospital as a newborn), but for the most part, limit what goes into your valuable closet space by sticking to some sort of criteria.

Rather than pulling everything out at once, try grabbing a handful of hangers at a time and sorting as you go. Have boxes ready to go to the thrift store once they’re filled. If you have someone to pass items onto, then put them aside for that person--but only if they’ve agreed to take your items.

Once you have everything sorted and the boxes for the thrift store are taped up and in your car, it’s time to look at what you have and separate it by type. Put together a pile of your tops, a pile of your belts, a pile of your partner’s pants, and so on.

Make Room to Hang Everything

You will undoubtedly have more room than you started with when you go to put your clothes away because you’ve purged some unneeded items. If you can fit it all nicely on your existing clothing rods, then that’s great!

If not, however, you’ll need to add more rods for hanging. The easiest and most space-saving way is often to put in a rod a few feet under the first rod (you might need to raise the first rod a bit). This way, you can hang tops on the top rod and bottoms on the bottom rod. Or if another system makes more sense to you, that’s fine, too. On the other side of the closet, keep a single rod so you can hang coats, dresses, suits, and other longer items.

Put in Drawers for Folded Items

You might not have considered having drawers in the master bedroom closet, but hear us out: If you can store your foldables in the closet, you might be able to eliminate a dresser in the main part of your master bedroom. This will open up room that you could use for just about anything else, such as seating, an antique piece, bookshelves, and so on.

Your custom closet designer can install drawers for you. These are available in various finishes and open and close smoothly. If you want to go the DIY route, you could slide a short chest of drawers right into the closet. This won’t be as sturdy an option as professionally designed drawers, but it will still work to give you a place to store your folded items neatly in the closet.

Maximize Your Shelf Space

The typical standard walk-in closet has one shelf running along the top of the closet. It might be on three sides or just two. Most of the time, this shelving is made of wire. Sometimes, there’s a lower shelf, as well, on one side. This is a good place to start, but it probably isn’t enough shelving for all of your needs.

One action you can take to make your shelves more usable is to add bins of some sort. These are especially useful if you have wire shelves, because they will prevent items from falling through. Adding additional shelving gives you more options. You might choose to use them to store purses, shoes, hats, or various other outfit accessories. This is also a good place for boxes of items that you’re keeping in the closet for nostalgic purposes.

Think About Closet Accessories

Finally, you’ll want to be sure you have a place to store all of the smaller items you keep in your closet. For example, if you wear belts or neckties, getting a belt or tie rack will keep them in good condition and from sliding onto the floor. A shoe rack is good for keeping your footwear from getting stepped on. And a jewelry tray keeps your valuables in one place where they aren’t getting tangled up. A valet rod makes it simple to hang an entire outfit in one place so you know exactly what you’re wearing the next day, from the clothing itself to your accessories, shoes, and even undergarments.
