Avoiding Closet Moisture and Odor

Posted on November 03, 2011

Few things are worse than a damp or smelly closet. Between sweaty clothes and dirty shoes, closets can turn into very unpleasant spaces. But it doesn't have to be this way! There are very simple steps you can take to keep your closet as fresh as possible.

  • Never under any circumstance hang wet or damp clothes in the closet. They will leave a musty mildew odor. These items are best left in the laundry room.
  • Leave an open box of baking soda on a high shelf in the closet. Baking soda is known for absorbing moisture while eliminating closet odors.
  • If possible, allow the closet to aerate by leaving the door open as often as possible. Letting the air circulate will allow the closet to breathe and prevent the trapping of moisture.
  • If your closet has an outlet, place a scented plug-in there. Sacks of potpourri are also a lovely idea.
