‘Hoarders’ Show Shines Light on Problems

Mike Merritt • Apr 03, 2018

The TV series “Hoarders” has a lot of people talking about the snapshot inside the lives of people who can’t part with their belongings. You may not be in the crisis mode that they are in, but it’s interesting to see how out of control clutter can become, and how it can be part of a much greater problem.

Here’s what some people say about the show, which has new episodes on A&E on Monday nights.

Dr. Elizabeth Moore, a staff psychologist at Hartford Hospital’s Anxiety Disorders Center and a regular on “Hoarders,’’ tells The Boston Globe : “I think at one point or another we’ve all struggled with getting organized, but hoarding takes it to a new extreme. I hear a lot of people say, ‘After I watched the show, I cleaned out my garage.’ ’’

Mike Nelson, who has written several books on the subject, tells the San Jose Mercury News : "To a hoarder, a crumpled hamburger wrapper is no different than a box of diamonds. To them, everything has value, or potential for future use, even if it's broken or trash. So they keep everything."
